I stopped at the Zwinger at least once each day that I spent in Dresden. I couldn’t get enough of it. The place is so vast, yet somehow I felt like I was in my own little, beautiful corner of Germany. There were plenty of other visitors, but they seemed to mostly head straight for one of the three museums housed by the palace, leaving me to wander and explore completely on my own.
As I reached the top of an ornate staircase, I discovered a wide open terrace with beautiful fountains and sculptures. I drifted through empty rooms with balconies that opened up to the grand courtyard. I found a quiet spot in the shade and imagined the festivals and tournaments that had taken place there centuries ago.
The imagination can really run wild in a place like this.
