The first time I was on this stage was during a tour of the Masonic Temple years ago. We had spent the day exploring lodges, chapels, and all sorts of strange and beautiful rooms. We wandered down eerie hallways and through (I’m 99% sure) haunted locker rooms to see an unfinished swimming pool. We saw elegant ballrooms, an expansive drill hall, and all kinds of amazing places to get lost.
The day was packed with fascinating stories, but the highlight for me was when we walked into this theater (then known as the Scottish Rite Cathedral) and our tour guide mentioned that it was Jack White’s favorite place to play.
Whether that statement is true or not, there have been some incredible shows here, and being back up on that stage last month was again the best part of my day.

After wiping out most of our time and energy in the Ancient Egyptian wing, we quickly learned on our first visit that we would not be seeing everything at the MET that day. Since that first trip, we’ve always selected a few “must sees” for our time at the museum and most recently explored the musical instruments section.

As the year comes to an end, like most of us I think, I’ve been spending some time looking back at the last twelve months remembering all of the good times. There are certain things you take with you into the new year, almost like souvenirs of 2012. I’m not just talking about the Detroit Blues album discovered in a little record shop in the hills of Montmartre 4,000 miles from home this past August.
There was the starry night in Lyon at the Roman amphitheater, savoring every note of that phenomenal Bon Iver show. There was the afternoon I spent in Music Heaven, right here in Detroit at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, hoping Jack White would never leave the stage. It’s the memories and experiences we take with us as our adventures through 2012 come to an end that to me are the best keepsakes of all.
