I ventured to the top of the Powder Gate during my first trip to Prague, so I wasn’t planning on doing it again this time… but… after breakfast one day, I noticed how beautiful the sky was… and being only around the corner from the Gate, I couldn’t resist a quick trip to the top.
I’m so glad I did it. Even though the scenery is the same, my original photos had a dreary, overcast sky. Not only did I get a “redo” of this gorgeous view, I had an amazing time soaking in the scenery.
Sometimes I worry that when returning to a city I’ve visited before, it won’t live up to the memories. For this trip to Prague at least – and even this trip to the top of the Powder Gate – that was definitely not the case.

View of the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle from the Old Town Bridge Tower
I had to get a little too close to some crunchy spiders for my liking to get these shots, but I guess they deserve to enjoy a nice view too.

If you could take off and go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? My answer to that question 99% of the time is Prague, so words can’t do justice to how excited I was to return. The fairy tale architecture, the compelling history & legends, the Krušovice… all wonderful reasons to love Prague, but there’s something more that draws me so intensely to this city. Some of my ancestors came from what is now the Czech Republic, but unfortunately I don’t know much about them. If they ever lived in, or even passed through Prague I guess I’ll never know, but I still wonder if there is some deeper connection to the past that makes me love this city as much as I do.

Ornate or simple, colorful or plain, places of worship come in all sizes and architectural styles, but one thing they have in common is that sense of peaceful solemnity inside. Wherever I am, whether visiting another state or someplace on the other side of the world, there’s a sense of familiarity when I walk into a church. I feel safe and at home.
Churches are one of my favorite subjects to photograph not only for their beauty, but also for the way they reveal a connection that crosses borders, cultures, and time.

I would say that Prague is the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen, but I don’t think that’s fair to the others. I felt like I stepped into a fairy tale when I arrived, so unless I’m comparing it to Gondor or wherever Cinderella lives (neither of which have I visited, just to be clear) it’s in a category all on it’s own.
Filled up over the centuries with beautiful architecture as far as the eye can see, Prague is a breathtaking site from above. These are some of my favorite shots from high up in the Powder Tower and Prague Castle. Up high or down on street level though, it’s such a gem. I loved getting lost in it’s magic.

There is a legend that says you if you make a wish while touching one of the 30 statues on the Charles Bridge (or Karluv Most in Czech), it will come true. Unfortunately, I touched the wrong one. That’s ok though, it just gives me yet another reason to return to beautiful Prague.
Construction on the bridge began in 1357, and less than 40 years later poor St. John was thrown from it for not revealing the Queen’s confession to King Wenceslas IV. Today on the bridge though, you will see a lot of non-violent (and quite talented) artists and musicians selling paintings of the city and playing everything from classical music to Metallica.
Like most visitors, I traveled over the bridge many times during my visit, and even under it once or twice. With beautiful views of the Vltava River and the gorgeous architecture of both the Old Town and Prague Castle, I could have parked myself there for a full day just to take pictures.
